Description of the video:

00:18
I had a student terribly, terribly stuck; just horribly stuck.
00:23
Just - internal battle, didn't know, just didn't know.
00:28
And finally he said, "I want to be around boats."
00:33
I said, "OK, good!
00:37
Now what?
00:39
OK, you want to be around boats."
00:41
He goes, "I don't know, I want to be around boats."
00:43
I said, "OK, let's get you around boats.
00:47
Where do you want to be around these boats?"
00:49
He goes, "I want to be in London around boats."
00:53
Excellent!
00:56
All right.
00:57
So that summer, I worked with him through that semester.
01:03
He got an internship in a boat yard, at a shipping boat yard, in London.
01:10
I am one of the kids that changes their major all the time!
01:16
I started off coming in wanting to do something art-related.
01:20
But then I told myself that maybe I couldn't do something art-related in the future that
01:26
could get me a sustainable career.
01:29
So I dabbled in psychology, education, interior design, until it finally just led me back
01:38
to a studio major... It's just always been a passion of mine, and I didn't think I could
01:44
make a career out of a passion.
01:47
And then someone was like, "You should just try it.
01:51
Just do it."
01:52
And most of the time it was my advisors that kind of pointed me in the direction to follow
01:58
my dream.
01:59
Sometimes just, well, what career, well, what major - that doesn't seem to have the same effect sometime
02:04
of "OK, envision this person that you'd like to be in ten years.
02:07
What is she doing?
02:08
What kind of people is she working around?
02:11
Is she extroverted, is she introverted, does she enjoy information, or data, or does she
02:16
enjoy children, does she... and sometimes that will get the conversation.
02:20
And I could see her (this was an appointment I just had yesterday)... she even mentioned
02:25
at one point, "You know, my dad has this one friend who's doing this and I always loved
02:29
talking with her."
02:30
And we talked about having an information interview with that friend, and going to where
02:33
she works, and just asking her, "What did you major in?
02:37
What kinds of things were you interested in?"
