Undergraduate Teaching Interns (UGTIs)

The Student Academic Center employs honor undergraduates each academic year to assist within the Education X101: Learning Strategies for Math (M118) and the Education X156: College and Life Long Learning courses. The position includes attending the education course, working with in-class projects, conducting small group learning sessions and facilitating individual conferences with students.

Application Process

Some candidate selections are made from applications for work study internships provided by the Honors Program. Other applicants may contact Dr. Sharon O. Chertkoff through e-mail (schertko@indiana.edu), or by phoning (812) 855-7313, or by dropping by the Center at 316 N. Jordan to complete an application.

Peer Instructors

Recruitment is conducted each spring for the following academic year. Requirements include having overcome obstacles that once contributed to lowered GPA standing, completion of the Student Academic Center retention program, and demonstrated knowledge of the procedures and methods that accomplished this successful change. Peer instructors will assist with class sessions, conduct small group sessions on a weekly basis, and serve as mentors for other students who are just beginning the process of reclaiming academic standing.

Note: X158 Peer Instructor candidates can only apply if they have taken X158.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders

Recruitment is conducted during fall and spring semesters. Requires the successful completion of course (M025, M118, E201, E201, M119, L104, etc.) and a recommendation by a professor. Duties will include attending the assigned class lectures, leading 3-4 collaborative learning sessions each week to help students review content and instructing students in the use of critical listening and learning strategies.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders for Economics E201 requires the successful completion of the following courses: E201, E202 and a third economics course like Bus G202 or E320 or E321. Duties will include attending the assigned class lectures, leading four collaborative learning sessions each week to help review content and instructing students in the use of critical listening and learning strategies. The sessions usually occur during late afternoon or early evening, Sunday through Wednesday. Supplemental Instruction Leaders for Math M014, M025 and M027 requires successful completion of Math M119 or Math M211. Duties include leading two four-hour collaborative learning sessions per week, Sunday through Thursday, during the hours of 7 to 11:00pm to help student review and learn math content as well as effective critical thinking and problem solving strategies.
